It’s gotten to the point the pendulum has swung that there is more air time with commercials than air time with the actual game.

The actual spot loads (commercial time) has not increased. But the perception is that it has, due to the placement and concentration of the ads.

Details:
  • Viewer perception. Some fans perceive an increase in commercials, even if the total broadcast time for ads has not grown. The reason may be changes in the pacing of the game or the placement of breaks. For instance, the length of NFL commercial breaks was increased in 2017 to allow for fewer, but longer, interruptions. In college football, rule changes meant to shorten games have led to commercial breaks being concentrated and feeling more frequent.
