Hi All ! New Problem here. No Book yet on this motor but just needing some possibilities of what might be wrong...(Not sure of the year))
Dad just bought a 20hp motor (ser in Subject). on the tiller handle there are a few positions..
1STOP
2SLOW
3START
4FAST
Underway in a 16 foot boat the hashmark on the handle will only get to the Start position and is very Slow on the water (felt like 1/2 throttle). I checked the motor with the hood off and I can see the mechanical advance stopping on the shifter stop when in "N"..and going another 1 to 2 inches further to another stop when in gear. I cant see the butterflys but the butterfly arm IS moving to it;s stop at Full throttle (START position on the tiller) Bulb is firm underway and the plugs looked the same when I got home and pulled em'. So that should rule out one Cylinder firing ? Electric start, Runs and Idles Good, but wont goto WOT. Any Ideas where to start looking ? thanks for reading ! and if anyone might know the part # for the Lower unit seals I'd appreciate it too !!! thanks !

Joe....the serial number posted in the "Post Topic" looks more like the model number....which would make the engine a 25hp 1973. Did you look on the large welch plug on the block for the model number?

Did you visually check the throttle plate at WOT as being flat across the throat?

If you want to find out if there is a plug not firing, pull each plug wire one at a time with the engine running. Look for the wire that does NOT change the way the engine is running.

What are you meaning by this OBJ ?? Is the the butterfly in the throat ? (Not the Choke plate on the front of the carb right ?) Flat meaning as on end ? Like an "O"" with a line thru it right ? WHen looking down the throat of the carb..

Could this be a fuel pump problem ?

But the Butterfly in the carb has a shaft attached that extended thru the Body of the carb and that bar bottoms out on it;s stop. So it physically cant turn any further.

I'll get the model off the welch tonight ! Thanks OBJ !!

Ok I checked the welch Plug and the numbers are as follows:
25302A
E0004131

New Problem...
I was testing and Pumping the Bulb extra hard and Got a stream o' gass shooting 8" into the air from a black square plate with 4 screws and had the gas line running to it. one of the screws had Crushed the Dome of the "fuel pump " ?
Wrong screws I suspect ? Big heads...
So the Question now is will a hole like that under extreme bulb pressure produce 1/2 throttle ?
my guess is yes. this has got to be the root of my issues.

Which number am I using to determine patrs for this motor ? And do most fuel rebuild kits come with a new face plate ? (If that is the Dome looking thing thats leaking)

Hey OBJ what up with the welch Plug ? Are one of those my serial number ?

And do you know if that top plate comes with the Fuel Pump Kit ? Or coverplate ?

25302 is the model number. Used to determine the year on OMC products

AE000413 is the serial number. Not good for anything except maybe for a dealer or the factory..

New pump kit will not come with anything but the internal parts. You need a new pump... Fuel pump part number is 388684. That is the OMC number.... Any dealer should have one..About $45.00-$55.00...iboats does not have one, so...

Thanks ALOT ! Do ya think that a stream of gas shootin outta that would probably give us half throttle ?
I'm still thinking yes.....But when pumping the bulb furiously you;s think If the fuel diaphrams were bad it woulda at least rev'd a bit past what sounds like half throttle....

Any thoughts on this ?

Also does anyone know if there's a Stop in the evinrude tiller handle to keep it from going past Start. the Hashmark on the handle stops at the Start position....Jsut wondering .Advances are all on their stops just wondering if the rest of travel might be carb only ? Since the adv is already on it;s final Block stop at the START position...Think I may have a couple of problems....Fuelpump assembly is ordered and on it;s way !

Anyone wanna take a guess ?
1st: is there a stop on my tiller handle ? to keep it from hitting the Fast mark ?
2nd. If there's a hole in my fuel pump why cant I get a higher rev or 2 when pumping the bulb furiously ? It just humms at 1/4 throttle....:'(
