I am looking for feedback on the 21' Maxum with an I/O unit in it.The boat is a 1992.What should I look out for and how does the unit handle with this powertrain?

It is a 1992 Maxum Cuddy with a 120hp Merc/Force L-Drive I/O.Hours are unknown but the motor sounds solid and the bottom end has been rebuilt. The over all shape seems to be real good, the boat is a bank repo.I have necer run across this motor combination before and am a bit leary. How is it for parts/performance etc?

I certainly would stay away from the L-Drive. If I am not not mistaken this is a 2-stroke Force power head attached to a unique I/O unit. If reliability and trouble free boating is your goal, then I beleive this is not the boat for you.. At a minimum I would think expertise and parts would be hard to find, not to start on the Force argument..

Okay that's the third response so far telling me to stay away, can you elaborate a bit more on what you were saying about a unique I/O? Now is there anyone out there that may own one of these units that can either support the suggestions to stay away or do you have something to say that is in a more positive note.

AS far as the I/O is concerned it is not a mercrusier leg, nor a volvo, or even an OMC. I believe you will have difficulty finding parts and experience for repair. When I purchased my last boat, I passed up an OMC unit because of the fears that I may have difficulty finding parts and experience to help me fix it. I would think there is much more experince out there for OMC than with the L-drive.

Also, I mentioned the Force powerhead. I owned a force and did alright, but they are the Yugo of the ouboard world.

When making the choice between I/.O and OB there are tradeoffs on each side. On the I/O you have more maintenance, but genreally the engine is a very avaible block, the parts are widely available and you can fix them like you fix a car.

With the Ob you get lower maintenacne due to 2-stroke, but more proprietray parts and systems.

In this system you get the worst of both worlds.

120 hp for a 21' cuddy sounds low to me. can't see you going anywhere quick, and the engine will probably dog if you have a group onboard.

One of my first thoughts was that the boat may be underpowered.Today I stopped by the marine shop & he too said to stay away for the very same reasons that you all have stated.Too bad just she was a nice boat.I asked if I were to purchase the boat for the right price would an engine swap be possible and the answer was no.The hull was designed for this powerplant only.Other Maxum's with an inboard have a different design.

Alex,

Besides the obvious reasons listed above for not buying this boat, please keep in mind that it is a bank repo. What do people do when they know their property is going to be repo'd by the bank? They trash it! I've seen many-a-time when people have trashed their cars, boats, houses, etc, knowing they won't have it for much longer.

If you decide to buy the boat, I would recommend a very thorough inspection (full mechanical as well).

Sam
