There have been several posts lately that the muffs were not covering the water inlet slots on either side of the motor. Obviously you are sure of the position. Also, garden hoses have a habit of kinking right at the connection to the muffs. Also, if the impeller is worn, it will have a lot better chance of picking up when submerged instead of on the muffs. I assume you did not have a problem the last time you used muffs???
And you do not want to run for any length of time without knowing the impeller is getting water or it can heat up and warp the housing...
