225 hp cuts out at high speed, spark showing at wires

I have a 1989 225 hp evinrude, runs good most of the time but cuts out at high speed from time to time. Like it is only running on 4 to 5 cylinders. From 5400 tto 4500 RPM. Tonight I pulled the cover at night and noticed the on one side only there was sparks shooting to the engine block or threads on three plugs on starboard side only, as well as random sparks around coils and plug wires. Is this coincidence or this my problem. I had the motor at the marina for this mentioned problem, they told me the VRO was pumping to much oil causing the problem mentioned earlier. They disconected it saying was fixed, I took it for a test run today it is still happening. It seems to only happen after runing for while and will usally go away after shutting down for a while. By the way the mechanic told me i have 80 psi on one cylinder and 100 on the rest. Any help would be greatly appreciated. i would like to get at least the rest of the season out of this motor, but the loss of power makes me worry about going out in this cold weather in NY

Re: 225 hp cuts out at high speed, spark showing at wires

The fact that the problem arises after running for awhile, then disappears after it sits for a time is a clue.

Look under the flywheel at the large black coils at the rear of the stator (the ring of wound coils). Those large black coils at the rear of the stator are the beginning of the ignition system and they gerenate approximately 300 AC volts to energize the powerpack(s).

That stator runs very hot and eventually those black coils start to melt down. When this happens, the AC voltage to the powerpack(s) drops down which results in erratic ignition, and eventually no ignition.

For awhile, after cooling off somewhat, those coils will again produce enought AC voltage to energize the powerpack(s), but eventually as mentioned/insinuated above.... they will fail altogether.

If they're melting down, there will be a sticky substance dripping down from them onto the timer base assy and the block.

This may not be your problem, but it is the usual cause of the problem you describe.

volts seem fine no melting apparent

Sounds like you definitely need some new plugs and wires. Either the porcelain is cracked on the plugs or the insulation is bad on the wires. You may have other problems but this needs to be fixed. NO way should you be seeing sparks shooting around, also this is dangerous with gas fumes under that hood.
