I am still looking for some one that can help me with my 1999 225 hp johnson It is putting out to much voltage at crusing rpm it puts out about 16-17 vdc the water pump has been replaced the voltage reg/rec has been replaced by the dealeer and the battery was replaced, still puts out to much juice,The dealer is scratching his head and the boat is back in the shop. my question has been up for three days and no one will touch this. are there any real mechanics out there no wanabes or computer wussies

the voltage output are you checking it with a volt meter or your dash gauge.

Re: 225 hp voltage problems

I just looked at your other post. OBJ, one of the best around, asked a related question. I'm sure most everybody was waiting for your reply. The same question was asked on this thread. A little more info goes a long way.

Many times we wait to see your answer to a request for more info before jumping in and stepping on toes. Lets just take it a step at a time and try to keep everything on one thread. I get lost real easy these days....

This problem is driving me crazy! I have read several shop manuals and followed all the test proceedures I have a good working knowledge and am very familliar with the concept of ignition and charging process all that being said this problem does not add up... to date I have 1 switched batteries to rule that out. Changed impeller kits just in case it was a cooling problem, it was time to change them anyway. spoke to my dealer and he said it was a guage... no question about it WRONG changed out the reg/rec. worked for about 5 minutes and then buried the volt guage at 18 vdc. no the battery on that engine is hot as a firecracker...hmmmm.still doesn't work right. I am at a loss as to what to check now.. the stator? Can it produce to many ac volts? how many ac volts does the stator produce? does it vary with rpm? how do you measure stator voltage

Re: 225 hp voltage problems

Hard to understand your runon sentences but I sumise you stated that the local dealer says that your voltage guage is not reading right and you say that he is wrong?Did you use a hand held volt meter across the battery leads with the engine running and verify that it is charging at 18 volts?

You can check stator voltage at the terminal block under the motor cover with engine running.Output voltage is between 18 - 20 and will vary slightly at different rpms.Just don't rev above 2500 rpms while hose running engine.Use a peak reading meter.Might also check each disconnected yellow lead for grounds in the R x 10,000 range. The yellow leads should be disconnected for this test.

Just be certain you have ruled out a faulty voltage guage on the boat.

While you are checking the wires and connections, check the main harness connection from engine to control at the engine end for arcing between the pins. The guage on the dash may not tell you much. The voltage is controlled by the regulator. This system a very simple system. Follow the steps in the service manual. If you are close to Ft Myers I will trouble shoot for free 2 hours.
