I have a 1996 225HP Johnson. When put in reverse it bangs and makes all kinds of noise. Forward would always work fine. Then the end of last year. Last 2 or so trips, it would not go into forward gear (it would after a few tries) It was like you would move the shifter but the was no gear responce (only the engine would rev higher and higher). Then the day I took the boat out, it was not going in at all. I reved the engine up to about 3000RPM and she would bang into gear. i didnt take it out till i got to the ramp.
Just yesterday I replaced the throttle and shifter cables. When the boat is put in reverse, the prop will seem to lock, but not tightly. I can very easily turn it past the locking point. Its like whatever engages the gear (I believe its the clutch dog) is not fully engaging it.
Does anyone know if there is any sort of adjustment I should check or anything before I go out and buy a new gear set and attempt the rebuild.
Thanks
