I am looking at a 1998 225 optimax with 65 hours on it according to the ecm. It ran out fine but it has a clunking noise at idle in foward or reverse. The merc tech that checked it out for me said it was a noise inherent to this year model design but not a problem. Did I get fed a line or is this true. It does go away immediatly off idle. Anyonw else have this noise?

crewser, did it have a stainless prop on it???? this could make the clutch load and unload against the driven gears causing a noise. i assume this was on land with no load on the prop , if you can get him to put the engine on the dyno and put a load on the propshaft i'll bet that the noise goes away. and only certain dyno's can run in reverse
