228 Mercruiser question

[Outdoors 2020]

We recently purchased a 1977 SeaRay V-195. On the upper gear case housing there seems to be some kind of plug missing on mine. What is the white plug in the one picture that is like mine? Sorry if it’s a stupid question, I know zero about boats.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... It's called a welch plug, to plug a hole from the machinin' process,.....

It needs to be replaced, before it's used,.....

Part no. should be 19-32652 7/8" welch plug.
