22ft holiday repower?

I have found a 22ft Holiday V5 with a OMC i/o in it. The engine is gone and the outdrive is stuck. How hard is it to convert to a Mercruiser engine and outdrive? Would a 4 cylinder have enough power to push this boat to 35 mph with 4 people and gear?

I had thought about possibly converting to a outboard but wanted to compare my options.

Thanks for any input.

Don't think a 4 banger is going to get you to 35mph. What size engine was in there before? I wouldn't try to go with an ob. The hull was engineered for I/o power and an ob would change the way the hull operates. There are conversion kits to go omc to merc... I think sei has something like that. Do a google search. Goodluck!

The omc has a larger transom hole so you would have to rebuild the transom for the merc sterndrive, I believe I once saw a conversion kit for the transom hole but I think I would just rebuild the transom.

Low - take a look at the Islander rebuild jasonoutside is doing. He pulled an OMC White Leg of Death and is installing a 4.3 Mercruiser. He shows all the work. It's a long thread.

You can repower with a O/B but has a bit of cost for the Bracket. Unless you are a welder. Also to repower will not be inexpensive. Either will work fine the big difference is how much deck space do you need? Either way you will have a fine boat to enjoy and the work is very rewarding.

Re: 22ft holiday repower?

I can tell you my new 140hp motor on a 21' cheif loaded with fishing gear, gas, kicker, 4 people will only top out at 26-27 mph at sea level. That is running 4100-4800 rpms, I changed the prop a few times. Changed my rpms but I kept my top speed in the 26-27 mph range. So I settled on 4600 rpms.

Why to you have to use a bracket to go to an outboard, can't you rebuild the existing transom then built a splash well inside the boat if you choose. I know it will take up room.

Or repower with a merc. If you want 35 mph I think you are stuck with a 4.3 v-6 or the in-line 6 if you find a engine/outdrive. A chevy v-8 (350) would make her run, but suck fuel.

I like my 140hp because it cruises at 20-22 mph nicely and I do not ski. I am a fisherman and generally the weather is rough enough to limit my speed to 10-15 mph. Fuel economy is pretty good. 4 banger cost less to buy.

If you can find a transom assembly you could get a 140 hp and sei outdrive. Might save some bucks.

It's a looooong thread. I pop in every once in a while but I seriously think I have ADD. That might be why I was 40 when I finally finished my college degree. There is a lot of good info in there, raising kids, marriage advice, dodging frying pans, heating your home with wood, and somewhere in there is a great big Islander too. Jas welds up the transom and drills/cuts for the Mercruiser 4.3, really good stuff.

I like either the 4.3 or the inline 6. The 4.3 is 3/4 of a small block Chevy, and I love the SBC. Either motor is reliable as all get out, and they are both Chevy's too:D. The 4.3 is a newer engine too, I'd lean towards that, IMHO.

you make it sound like a reality show........:D

agree with Don, if you stay I/o, go with the 4.3. the old six is getting hard to get parts for even if many of em are common to the four (they made the four, originally for the early-60s Chevy II, by lopping 2 cylinders off the old stovebolt six)

Re: 22ft holiday repower?

I believe a 140 will get you the speed you want but you would be runnin her wide open, which is not recomended for an inboard.
I have a 22' Islander 1983 with the 140 hp and she will top out at 34 mph (gps) with two adults, loaded, 25 gal fuel, 15 hp kicker, and all our fishing gear, or we went 34 mph with no fishing gear with 5 adults (wind to our back). I like the fuel economy of the 140 and it is rare to be able to go much more than 25mph on lake erie.

Re: 22ft holiday repower?

Being he said it's a V5 hull, I'm thinking it's new enough that it might have the cobra drive. I'm not certain what the first year for the V5 hull was though, but theres always hope :D If it is the cobra drive, SEI makes a conversion kit that bolts to the transom to bolt up a merc drive.

Re: 22ft holiday repower?

The owner said he is sure that it is not a Cobra drive unit. He was using this boat last year (2011) when the i/o seized. He has sold the engine and wants sell the boat, trailer and the outdrive. I would use it on Lake of the Woods, MN. which can get rough, short choppy waves, 3 - 4ft high, 4 - 5ft apart. Most of the time 18 - 25mph is cruising speed although it would be nice to be able to run at least 30 mph if weather allowed.
