:) Hi,
First, being new to the forum, we would like to say "Wow" what a source of information from a numerious amount of experienced boaters!
We have a 24' 2006 FourWinns deckboat w/ 5.7 GXI-G(F)320hp Volvo Penta DP-S I/O w/power trim/tilt. We love every aspect of the boat. We also have a factory installed wake tower to boot. We're just looking for a little quicker hole shot for getting a couple skier's up and out faster.
We would like your input in regards to Smart Tabs verses Hydrofoils. We've read "several" of the forums questions/answers on this subject. Due to all the answers we're kind of up in the air about which way to go. It appears that Smart Tabs would be the answer, mainly due to the size of our boat.
Your input would be most appreciated, and again "Wow"! It's great to be able to converse with fellow boater's! Thanks again!

Not even close on this one. Smart tabs are the only way to go. Don't even waste your money on the hydrofoils. Smarts tabs will really make a differance.

Re: 24' Boat Smart Tabs or Hydrofoil??

Well first off welcome to iboats!!

I am fairly opinionated on this subject, but here goes.

FORGET THE HYDROFOIL . . . I hate them, hate them, hate them, and when I see them on a reasonably new boat, the first thing that comes to mind is loser . . . ;) :D

If budget is not a concern AND you are the kinda people who like to have more control over your boat then I vote for adjustable tabs like Bennett's. If you are more of a turn key and go kind of person then I vote for Smart Tabs and they are about half the price.

Foils can introduce some uncomfortable and potentially unsafe handling characteristics. They also almost always slow a boat down. IMHO trim tabs on the other hand should be standard equipment on all v-hulls. Even without the hole shot improvement, they provide more stability at low speeds. Way better speed control at wakeboarder speeds, better visibility and if installed correctly usually as good or better top speed.

Adjustable tabs give you the added benefit of adjusting for shifting loads from side to side and the ability to apply higher levels of positive trim at higher speeds, or less trim at lower speeds if the conditions dictate. An example might be really nasty and sloppy conditions where you want the bow higher than usual to maintain a drier ride. Can't do this with Smart Tabs . . .

I don't sell any of this stuff, but I have installed and operated various sets of both types of tabs. Either way you go, you will absolutely love them!!

I have Smart Tabs on my boat and will not be without them again. If you are a wake boarder, you will be interested to know that you can plane at slower speeds with smart tabs and you definitely come out of the hole quicker. If after installing them you still aren't happy with hole shot towing two skiers, you might redistribute some weight or buy another prop with slightly less pitch to use when "skiing/boarding".

if you put out the money for a 2006 24' fourwinns, install helm-controlled trim tabs.

I gotta agree with mattttt25. You don't want smart tabs nor a hydrafoil on a 24 foot boat. You want full control over your tabs so you'll need trim tabs. Look at the Bennets, Lenco, etc. You won't be sorry.

forget the foil. i would suggest smart tabs, i have them on all my boats and wont go without them... but... matttt has a point. if you can swing the cost of the new boat, whats anoter 500 for some nice bennets trim tabs. any tabs are better than no tabs.

also take a look at your prop. maybe look at a prop with a smaller pitch, this allows the motor to "rev up " faster, kinda like changing the gear ratio in your car or putting smaller tires on your car, slower top speed over all, but ya get there quicker!
