24V Wire Gauge ? for trolling motor

Installing MK Terrova 24v 80lb motor, upgrading fm 12v system. Reading other posts and recom. the recomnd gauge wire is #6. however looking at what is factory installed is gauge #8 awg. Length is aprx 18ft fm motor to batteries. Is this #8 wire safe to use? The motor specs say its max amp draw is 56 amps...would that be cut in half (28 amps) being a 24v system??? Thanks all in advance for your input!

#6 is a sure bet. #8 will work, but will cut time off your motor due to heavier draw.
