25 HP Evinrude Electrical issues

Please Help, I'm a very novice mechanic!..... 1979. 25 HP Evinrude with electrical issues. Starts and runs like a champ sometimes, then the next time... no spark at all. Swapped out the power pack with a similar Johnson, ran good then died again. Someone suggested stator coils. I Pulled the flywheel only to find the stators (looks like a magneto to me?) is a completely sealed unit (encased in a big green ring of plastic). Cleaned it up put it all back together. I did change a ground wire which looked bad (cracked insulation & some corrosion). It started right up ran great. Went to start it up 2 hours later... No spark!!!!...... No start.

Next time it won't start, disconnect the black and yellow striped kill wire and see if that fixes it. Of course then you won't be able to stop it except to choke it or unplug the gas hose.

What the heck is wrong with this thing? I cut the black and yellow (kill) wire at the ignition switch. Starts and runs like a champ. It started at least 10 times over the period of an hour, no issues whatsoever! So I thought I'd put a toggle switch in the kill wire itself... problem solved... Right? Wrong... Before I went to the store (2 hours later) to buy the switch I thought I'd better start it one more time....... Yep..... NO SPARK!!!!!

Could the power pack be that intermittent? Or is a power pack the time of module that either works on doesn't work? I can't figure out how it doesn't have spark sometimes!!!

HELP. I THINK I'M GOING CRAZY!

Sorry for my poor writing above. Here is what I meant to say/ask.

Could the power pack be that intermittent? Or is a power pack the type of module that either works or doesn't work? Could the stator be that temperamental? I can't figure out how it doesn't have spark sometimes!!!

If I were to change out one thing, what do you think, the stator or the power pack?
