25 HP Johonson 96-97 won't run without choke

My motor will crank and run as long as I keep the key pushed in (choke on), cleaned the jets, that didn't seem to help. It will run for a few seconds after the choke is turned off, and if I push the choke on it will pick back up. Any suggestions on what to check?? Thanks

What is your complete starting procedure, step by step?

It does sound as if the carbs jets/orifices are gummed up. How did you clean them?

Just purchased the boat from a neighbor. I ordered a carb kit today, we pulled the jets and they were gummed up, but I plan on compleatly rebuilding the carb this weekend. I talked to a local boat mechanic and he said that was the problem. Thanks for the info.
