25 HP Mercury Problem - Any suggestions?

My '94 25XD Mercury outboard has never given me any trouble, until yesterday. We were cruising up the river when it started sputtering and died. I tried to crank it again, many times, but ended up having to get pulled back about 10 miles by a jet ski :( I have determined that there is no spark at either of the two cylinders. I work on my car and truck engines and have always worked on my I/O and outboard motors. But this one has got me stumped. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.
caldond@msn.com

Welcome to iboats, Wildbill.. 10 miles is some pull, esecially for a jetski.WoW!
I hope you gave him a good tip :D

Anyway, disconnect the black/tyellow-striped wire at the switchbox, and see if you have spark. If so, you have a short to ground in the ignition switch, lanyard switch, or the wire bundle itself.

If not, see if you have any open coils in the stator windings, trigger windings, ect.

Passing those tests, it's time to get the shop manual, and troubleshoot it using the voltage chart. If you don't have a peak reading meter, don't fret.Just check it on 600VAC scale, and find values 10-30percent lower than listed, and the component should be ok.

Thanks for your reply. However, my original message had a typo where I said '94 (I meant to say '84). And once I connect the black/yellow strip, how do I know if I have spark? Thanks again.

Wildbill, you need to (disconnect) the blk/yel wire
If that is the problem it will probably start.
Or remove the plugs and hold against the block
and look for spark.
