I have a question for some motor experts out there. I am looking to buy a 25-30 hp. I found a 1992 or 1993 Yamaha 30 hp, 3 cylinder, manual start, short shaft for $1200. The same seller has a 1994 Evinrude 25 hp, electric start, short shaft for $1000.00. I have heard the 30 hp will be a smoother running because of the 3 cylinder, but the 25 hp will be easier to resell because of it's common and high demand size. Let me know what you think. What's the best deal? What would you buy?
It's going on a V, 14 ft Aluminum
Thanks Dman

Re: 25 hp vs. 30 hp

If it was my boat, and if both motors were sound mechanically, I would go with the electric start.

30 HP will wear you out rope starting it if it does not start easily.

But, if you don't want to worry about a battery, go with the 30.

Finally, go to www.nada.com to check the book value prices, to see if you are getting a fair deal. It initially looks like you are though, for either motor.

Both should be good motors, and just as easy to resell if you later decided to unload it.

Is your boat rated for 30 HP?

That may decide it for you.
