25 hp water pump change gone wrong

Hi, Just starting here, been reading posts for a while. Changed out impeller yesterday and went fishing. No forward. Neutral and reverse are fine. I know I forgot the driveshaft sleeve, but I think the plastic retainer on linkage shaft may be the problem. Took it back apart just now and plastic piece is messed up. Could this keep it from going into forward? Thanks for any help as I need it.

My motor doesn't have the ID plate. I'm guessing it's about an 88. It has the two black plastic fin covers over the shifter linkage disconnect.

Make sure that the lower shift rod is fully screwed into the lower unit.

Get a new plastic piece, install it correctly and it may cure your problems.
