I have a 98 Johnson 25hp is leaking lower unit oil out of a small hole above the cavitation plate on the opposite side of the LU from the drain plug.I was given this engine and don't know any maintenance history. Is it possible that the oil had been changed and overfilled. I ran the motor 20+ miles today (1st time to run it) and when I got home it was drooling oil everywhere. I pulled the drain plug and there was no water in the oil. I pulled the vent plug and oil ran out from there for a bit. If the lower unit were overfilled would this occur? I caught the LU oil in a glass and see absolutely no evidence of water. The oil is a bluish black not the chocolate milk color that water would cause. Do I have a simple case of overfill or a bad seal?

You don't have any problem at all. That leaking is normal and that is what the hole is for.
Exhaust blows through the leg and out the prop and what your seeing is unburnt oil, carbon, etc that didn't make it out while you were on the water.
