My 89 25 HP rude has a small idle problem. It idles smoothly then sputters and dies. Runs great anywhere above idle. I ran it from just off idle to full throttle for about one hour in a lake, moving boat. It only has this happen at idle. New plugs and 120 PSI on each cyclinder. Plugs looked good after running. Appreciate the help guys I think I just about got her ready to go.

Dirty carb, air leak in fuel supply line, weak fuel delivery.

When's the last time you cleaned and rebuilt the carb? Did you soak the carb overnight and blow out all idle passages with compressed air?

If you replace a piece of the fuel line under the cowl with clear tubing can you see any air bubbles?

When it starts to sputter at idle, if you pump the fuel bulb does it keep going instead of dying?

Just a couple things to try.

Good Luck,
Kev

I went to pull the carb and found it LOOSE. I pulled the carb and opened it, everything is clean no gum and no varnish, cleaned the passages, blew it out, put it back on and tightened it, put the muffs on started it and the water pump is out. But it ran much better for the few seconds I let it run. The previous owner said he had the carb rebuilt last spring. Get a new water pump in it, and try again.
