25 yamaha disassembly

so I have a 2010 Yamaha 25esh tiller handle. the bracket that works the tilt or trim is cracked.. I have a replacement part ordered.
my question is disconnecting the shift rod... how do I and what are the steps involved In removing the shift rod.

does the whole lower unit need to be removed? or can the shift rod be disconnected from the top end of the motor?

I am working on getting a photo as soon as my camera is charged... just wanna put it out there now.

oh and do any of you have a service manual that you can look this up?

dang. nobody has a book or a picture or diagram on what I need.... there has to be a Yamaha mechanic on these boards right....

There is a small clip holding the upper part of the shift rod in place. It can be kind of a bother to reach without removing everything, but with the right tool it can be done.
