$250 for engine/out drive inspection?

I recently bought a 2000 pleasure/ski boat with a Volvo 5.0Gi. I had to get a inspection for a warranty transfer. I was expecting to pay 1-2hrs labor @ $60/hr. I was charged 3.8hrs for $250. Seems excessive just for an inspection. Is this reasonable to do a compression test, lower unit pressure test, check power trim, engine cooling system, circulatin pump, ignition syste, control box, u-joints, gimbal bearing, bellows, fuel system? Or does this come with being a boat owner?

Seems excessive to me unless they removed the drive.

I was told they did remove the drive to check the gimbal bearing and the u-joints?

Welcome!!!!! If it is excessive it is not really far off.A compression test can be simple or extremely hard,so time comes into play.My last boat was a simple one to get to the plugs and my current is a hassle. The time difference is at least double.A good idea when getting a compression test is to have a new set of plugs ,gapped and waiting to be put back in after the test.Since the plugs have to be put back in anyway, they might as well be new ones.Removal of the drive is not difficult but it takes time. Also $60 an hour sound a little cheap depending where you are.Charlie

If they did all they said they did, that price would be reasonable around here.........

Cdn-cajun – WELCOME to the board!!! The shop should have told you the estimated cost prior to doing the inspection. The shop may have used a guide that details the labor time for inspection of each item, and charged you that amount, regardless of the actual time it took.

Crazy Charlie – I image swapping spark plugs may be like having your car tires balanced...they put the same tire back on the same wheel. Ask to have them placed on a different wheel and they charge you for tire rotating, too…even though the tires are already off the car. I guess it depends on the mechanic/shop.
