98' merc 25, 2-stroke. The motor sat for awhile and this whole season I've ran it twice. Once was full throttle for about 4 miles and back and once was at idle for about 5 hours, giving it gas a little of the time. I ran it in salt water and right after I left the harbor took it to fresh water to flush the motor. When I started it it ran very well then all the sudden, began to gain RPM's on it's own after moving the warm up lever. About a minute into that the RPM's dropped back down and back up again. Today I start it up, and same thing. Now it almost dies, then throttles up, levels out, then the same process again. Question is, the electric choke....is a magnet correct? When you appy the choke it gains RPM's, just like it does on it's own....could the little selonoid be bad? Second......Is it just the carb? The fuel bowl where the filter is had about 1/4 of crap in it. Should I just clean and rebuild the carb, maybe replace the float needle? Or from anyones experience could it be something else?
