hi i have a 69 johnson 25hp and it is slipping out of gear at slow speed and full throttle. I can hold the shift lever down in forward and it will stay in gear but i can fell it trying to pop out. when im operating it the actual shift lever doesnt pop out of position it stays there. the motor violently jumps out of gear when going full speed and winds up real high. i had to take off that shift linkage a couple of weeks ago to repair the impellar. when i put it back together the shift lever was a lot easier to put in gear. could i have done something wrong when putting it back together or does it sound like them clutch dogs are going out or something else? THANKS!

Re: 25hp johnson slipping

If you got the screw in the notch in the shift rod, that's all there is to do in that area.

OK, popping out of gear: Usual cause is the clutch dog and forward gear are worn out. Another cause is the shift linkage is loose somewhere. But neither problem stands alone for very long. A worn dog and gear put great stress on the linkage, causing stuff to come loose. On the other hand, loose linkage causes improper or incomplete engagement of the dog with the gear, and that causes rapid wear of those parts.

You cannot fix one without at least checking the other. They are too related.

linkage or clutch dog. screw has to go thru the indentation on the shift shaft
