I installed a new impeller and now have trouble lining up reinstall correctly. Should the gear shift be in forward, reverse or neutral? I can spin the prop either direction with some effort and watch the flywheel spin in any gear. The shift shaft has a small hole near the top. Can this be turned to line up neutral in the lower unit? Do I need a special tool or just anything that will fit in that small hole? Does it pop up and down, there is a small boot at the other end.

Don't turn the shaft, you simply move it up or down to shift the unit

Re: 25HP LOWER UNIT MARINER

I tried moving the shift lever up and down to select a gear for the lower unit before reassembly. Should the console be in the same gear? Does it matter if the lower unit is in neutral? Any help very appreciated.

Got everything hooked back up and can now shift gears. I heard that if the impeller when installed gets the tips turned the wrong way because the prop was turned that it may not work correctly or pump water. I fired it back up submerged in water, it wasn't running long and never started pumping water. Smoke was coming out instead. Does it have to run a little while first?

It may need to run for 20-30 seconds before the tattle tale will ****.

Were was the smoke comming from? Was it just exhaust?
