25hp mercury elec start inop

I have a '97 25hp mercury motor. It has a crank start and a push button start. It starts no problem with the hand crank. When I push the start button the thing that is supposed to spin and pop up, just spins.<br /> I checked a couple of books at the library. and they mentioned taking out the bendix drive and cleaning it. <br /> ANY ADVICE?

Try spraying the bendix with WD-40.<br /><br />Also, if the starter is not spinning fast enough it will not go up into place.<br /><br />TMD

While cleaning your bendix with WD-40. beat the starter with something, like a hammer. See if that dont help, if it does, keep hammer in your boat.
