270 outdrive stuck in forward

85 bayliner capri aq125b with 270drive.Drive stuck in gear, check and tried to remove cable but cable seems stuck in lower unit after I removed that retainer plate. Does something else need to come off to get the cable out. Any ideas why drive would stick in gear. When shifting reverse is also forward. Just the cable failing? Thanks everyone.

did you remove the cover on the back of the outdrive? The cable is attached in there.

I removed a small rectangular piece with two small bolts and the shift cable runs through one side of it. How does the cable disconnect?

#77 in this link is the cover I'm refering to. Loosen the upper screw and remove the lower and the cover will come off revealing the shift mechanism.

Thank you problem solved. The pin dropped out that holds the shifting bracket in place. 15 bucks later its back working great. Thank you as always for the input
