Hi, I have a 270 out drive and the previous owner had gear lube in it. The owners manual said same oil as the engine 10w-40. I have it draining now would it be ok to put motor oil in or should i just put gear oil back in. It had little dribble of water in it. Other than that the gear lube was thick and not burnt.

This is on a 1985 Bayliner Capri VOLVO AQ125A/270 Drive.

Engine oil, like the book says.

Who ever put gear lube in was WRONG, and obviously didn't know what he was doing.

Kinda what i thought, do i have to do anything special to flush it out or just pour the motor oil in there, do i fill it through the dipstick tube or is there another spot i fill it?

A side question, my cousin has a 76 quatermaster with a volvo 200c his drive plate says its a 270, like mine does but his doesnt have the flapper on it like mine. His looks like the 280 in my book.

P.S. Do you have the tear down on a volvo 200c like you did on mine, we just got done winterizing his today.

You pull the hex plug out of the back of the upper gear box, hook up a VERY special and expensive funnel system (see photo's below) and pour in the oil. Allow plenty of time for the oil to settle on the dip stick and DO NOT overfill. You want the oil level on the flat of the dip stick. I try to get them within the upper 1/2". Too much will blow the front seal.

Simply changing the lower unit, or even the back cover over the shift mechanism can change the drive to anything. Pictures would help.
PS, the 200C is an engine, not a drive.

Wow, and I've always filled mine from the bottom with a little pump you can buy at most marine stores.

As usual Don S. is on the cutting edge of new tools and techniques.;)

I think my way is better. But then I'm kind of old fashoned.

Pump it up from the drain hole, about 2.25 quarts. Like Don said, halfway up the flat portion of the stick.

Do you have the Volvo Drive chart? It shows the shape of different drives.

So no special flushing, i let the stuff drain out for a good hour or so. I have 10w40 valvoline i'll put in the drive. I average 20hrs a year on the boat, unless i forget to shut the key off, the the timer runs when the engine is not.

I was just seeing if you had a manual for that engine, we've been trying to locate one for his. I will get a picture of his drive soon, its got the big exhaust port on the back. Like you said plates could have been changed etc..

Here's the drive chart you can download.

Yea, but it's messy filling from the bottom and how do you know when you have around 2.7 quarts in the drive. (It varies from 2.25 to 3.0 so don't be surprised). Nothing more fun than pulling the hose out of the drive and dropping the drain plug while the oil is draining back out.

I have 10w40 valvoline i'll put in the drive.

While there is nothing wrong with 10W40, a straght 30W holds up better in a drive than a multi grade oil.

Straight 30 it is, i was reading some more forums that mentioned 30HD.

His could be the 270E. His drive raises and lowers a lot faster than mine does. Or it could be the 280E, the other 280's look like they have the flappers on them

You can change a 270 outdrive by just changing the lower unit. You can make it a 280, 290, or even a DP if you want. Just by changing the lower unit. But it WILL NOT change the name on the cover. Or, if they put a different cover on the drive because the old one got lost. Happens all the time.

Lots of things can happen in 30+ years. With many different DIY owners that don't know what they are doing.

The color of my gear lube that came out was yellow, and some dark grey and light grey. These normal colors. It was all pretty thick not runny like it had water in it.

The vast majority of it was the yellowish color, like what was on the dipstick.
