First of all thanks guys for all your help to a novice like me, this forum is invaluable! I am correcting one problem at a time with your help.

I read all the prior posts on this and studied the diagram from Don plus the instructions in the seloc manual. After making the adjustments the retaining pawl still doesn't engage the adjusting pin- there is a space between them whether I am in Neutral or Reverse. so the pawl never touches the underside of the retaining pin and the drive never locks down in reverse.

the thrust sleeve seems to be in the correct position- just a hair above level with the yoke contour. but there does seem to be a bit of play in the push rod like it is too loose.

any suggestions? and thanks again.

Maybe by the end of summer I will have this old boat set up like it should be!

Joe

Re: 270 reverse locking mechanism

still working on the reverse lock.
I adjusted the retaining rod pawl at the shift lever so that it just touches the retaining catch. Next I adjusted the thrust sleeve via the stop nut. but the locking mechanism still fails to engage when in reverse gear.

It looks like the retaining pawl push rod never moves whether its in forward, neutral or reverse. It can move by hand so its not frozen.

any ideas, this is getting frustrating. I can see the diagram in my sleep.

Joe

One other thing,
the way this mechanism is related to the shift mechanism could be a problem. the shifter/throttle at the helm sets up Neutral at the 2 o'clock position and the reverse is after that around 3 o'clock. the red button on the handle does not seem to disengage the prop either when giving it throttle.
any relation to the reverse lock mechanism?

Re: 270 reverse locking mechanism

I did try that yesterday. Goes into reverse and the pawl rod pushes on the yoke of the retaining catch where it should be. The problem is at the other end-where the long rod comes down to the lock mechanism- if I press on the lock mechanism and get the hooks to go over the bar where they should go if its in reverse, there is no "give" or play in the long rod for it to move anywhere, so the hooks cannot latch onto the bar because the long rod has no way to move upwards allowing the hooks to latch. On the top of that rod is a bullet that protrudes from the top of a yoke that the piston pushes down on, and this bullet sticks up very slightly so that the piston can make contact.
