I'm new to boats, and we have our first boat. It's an 86 Bayliner Capri 2150 w/ aq225e and 275 outdrive.

I've been having the issue with the outdrive locking down and not getting it able to come up. but I think I have more than 1 problem as well, so bare with me.

- outdrive locks in the down position and won't release without manually releasing the latch.
- most recent trip, i couldn't even get the latch to release by hand so i popped out the rod that the springs attach to and that was able to release it
-- this same trip, as I was pulling the boat in to trailer, I could not get the drive into reverse. This has never happened before. Since then I've ran the motor with muffs on and it shifted in and out of reverse just fine (granted it wasn't locked down because that little rod is still out)
-the outdrive tilt seems to need some encouragement to get up. and when i put it down in the water, the light that normally turns off when the tilt is all the way down, never turns off anymore. It wasn't like this on the first 5 or 6 trips out this year.
-on the way home from this last trip, the drive dropped halfway. so i strapped it up and made it home. Since then i've lowered it and raised it, and it hasn't dropped since, but it is just sitting there.

any idea what my problem(s) could be? Base off browsing these forums I'm guessing the tilt motor/gear needs replaced and/or clean up, and same with the locking mechanism.

tia for any advice.

It's been a while since I screwed around with our tilt on our V/P 280 outdrive, which is similar to your 275. 1st download a V/P OEM manual for your drive. The outdrive is suppose to lock when its down, and you pull the rod down to release. Your tilt should not have anything to do with reverse, the drive locks so when going to reverse the drive doesn't lift up. It sounds like your tilt motor works but the ram needs to be probably taken a part and cleaned up and reassembled. The tilt mechanism uses a cone clutch, which can be adjusted for more tension. Its not really made to hold the drive up for transport, it can slowly drop down on each bump of the road. They make a triangle support bracket, which looks like a musical triangle, that goes between the drive and transom plate. I'd recommend getting one. For more info on the tilt motor and tilt ram/clutch do an advanced search in this Volvo section using keyword "tilt" and using my name. It will show a thread that's decent along with a link to another thread. These go into detail on repairs.

If you can lower the drive without hitting the ground and with the key on try pushing down on the black box on the top of the tilt unit to see if the light goes off. There should be 2 Allen head screws with lock nuts underneath that hold it in place. The top of the box holds the limit switch down on the inside which controls the light. Hopefully the rod that pushes the drive up is not bent.
