28 foot 1979 OMC Stringer, trim tabs

Took it out last saturday for the first run with my new rapido engine, what a difference! Not a single problem, I love it! It's like a new machine. New motor and rebuilt fully mechanical stringer. Heres my question........I want to get some kind of automatic trim tabs. Are "smart tabs" a good deal? I want to stay away from the electrics and make it as simple as possible. Thx for the advice!

Get actual trim tabs.They cost more but are worth it.Try salvage yards in your area or on line.Jerry

the electric/hydraulic ones? Why are "Smart tabs" a bad idea?

Smart Tabs are not a bad idea, there cheap will help you get up on plane faster.

However Smart Tabs are limited in what they can do. If the boat leans into the wind from a cross wind they can not level the boat. They do the same work in 8 foot swells as in a 2 inch ripple.

Helm adjustable tabs you can adjust your boat for the best ride at any speed or any water condition. Smart Tabs are set up on land for you average condition. Helm Adjustable Tabs can do so much more and are worth every penny when the water gets rought.

Yes Smart Tabs are well worth it, I have them. If your boat is a "destanation" type boat then helm adjustable tabs are better suited to that type of boating. However, Smart Tabs will still provide many improvements in how your boat handles if you cannot afford or don't want helm adjustable tabs. I'd absolutly suggest you get tabs of some kind.
