My 1993 28 spl has a split gear case at the lower unit. The horizontal seal is leaking and water is getting in. The low unit fluid is like chocolate milk after 2 uses. It also drips about 1 oz of fluid per week. I believe the split gear case seal need replacing???
If I leave the o/b mounted on the boat, can I remove the 6 bolts at the gear case and change the seal? Will the shaft, bearings, other seal, etc. stay in place when I remove the lower part?
Thanks!

Don't attempt that job with the rig in the water. On the trailer, have the engine fully tilted and with the shift in forward gear. If you're careful, that usually retains the propshaft, gears etc in place. Something I've done many times.

Thanks Joe!
Could you tell me if I need the OMC alignment tool the manual notes to put the gear case back together?

I retired before that engine came into existence and am not aware of that alignment tool.

I've never used an alignment tool on a split gearcase.
