Its hard to tell whats wrong from here. Pulling the upper gear assembly is routine maintenance. Once the upper is off, you can inspect the ujoints and get a better idea of the condition of the outdrive and the connecting components. And, pulling the upper is the first step to pulling the motor, which may be the next step...

Re: 280 volvo penta outdrive

You may very well have the bearings in the flywheel housing going bad.

On the 280, there is an intermediate shaft from the engine coupler to the drive.

If there is water ingress into the drive bellows area, it's very common to have to replace the shaft bearings as well as the ujoints on the 280 drive shaft.

There are 2 types of flywheel housings, a 1 bearing and a 2 bearing style. The 1 bearing style can be done from the rear of the boat, but the 2 bearing style requires removal of the engine to re and re.

i have the 2 bearing type.any tricks to removing the motor.also oil from the outdrive in the bellows,i notice the shift cable plastic sheathing was split, could water enter the outdrive housing from this and force oil out or do you think a seal is gone,

Re: 280 volvo penta outdrive

The oil in the bellows is a bad seal in the upper gear box caused from water getting in the ujoint bellows. I would have the upper gear box resealed by an experienced tech.
