28spl lower unit swap

Hi everyone
I have a 1990 Johnson 28spl (power head same as 30 and 25). It has the older style lower unit without the trough hub exhaust. I was wondering could I swap it with a newer style through hub from around the same year. Also is there any big disadvantages of the older style lower unit compared to the newer through hub.

You would have to change out the exhaust housing too.-----Easier to put the 28 powerhead onto a through hub midsection / lower unit.
