I feel very silly for asking this question but.... I have a 88 24' Albemarle w/ a 290 dp outdrive. I just replaced the u-joint bellow and want to change the oil. I see the dipstick at he top and a screw at the bottom. Is this all one oil resevoir together or are they separated? Just wanna know how to change the oil and what type of oil to use. I appreciate the help you guys are great.

Re: 290 dp

Are you referring to the drive or engine? 290DP is a sterndrive type, the AQXXX number will be the engine.

If it's the engine, depending on what type it is it's nearly always all in one. If you can pull the plug on the oil pan and drain it without filling your bilge with oil, that works well and is fast. Run the engine on muffs first to heat it up a little, that'll make it flow out quicker.

Otherwise a lot of people buy a vacuum sucker, looks like an old style gas can with a pump on the side. You pump it up then it sucks the oil out via the dipstick tube.

It's basically like changing the oil in a car... get the old oil out, change the oil filter, put new oil in to the right level...

I am replacing the bellows so I am referring to the outdrive. I see the dipstick on the top and the plug at the bottom near the props. Does it all fill threw the bottom plug? Does the top section and lower section of the outdrive share the same oil or are they separate? I just want to change the oil properly and with the right vecosity oil. thanks again

Yes to all of the above. 80-90 wt gear lube.

Should take s bit less than 3 qts.

Do I fill it from the bottom?

There are a couple ways, I fill using a small pump I got at the local marine store and pump up from the bottom. Someone else may have a better way.

When will i know its full?
Oil needs to be in the full range, flat part of the stick.

does the dipstick check the oil for the whole outdrive (upper and lower)
yes.

Yes, I checked the manual and there is a fill hole under the shift cover, towards the top of the upper gear box. If you have the OEM manual, page 137, reads:

2. Tilt the sterndrive to the full up position. Remove
the fill plug (1) and fill with approx. 2.2 liters of GL-5
synthetic gear oil. See Techical Data. Install the fill
plug with a new gasket.
Tighten the fill plug to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft.).
Lower the sterndrive and check the oil level with the
dipstick. If necessary, Top off the sterdrive with oil
through the dip stick hole.

I learned to fill it with the pump, but this sounds easy enough.

Let us know how it goes.:)
