2HP Mariner Motor Problem

Hi, I have a 2 stroke, 2HP Mariner 2M 6A1 motor I’ve been working on which wont start.

I have removed the carb, and checked it over, and it seems fine. I have sprayed engine starter into the air intake and the motor runs for a few seconds, so I know that the ignition system is fine. Also, I have looked at the timing system and there is nothing noticeably wrong.I have also tried running it after adjusting the fuel/air mix screw to different levels but it made no difference.

The engine did work but has been standing for a year and was never really cleaned with fresh water after usage. I am not really sure what to do next. Any ideas about what else I can check or what else could be wrong would be great.
Thanks

Re: 2HP Mariner Motor Problem

I'm not familiar with that particular motor. On my Johnson 2hp, there is a fuel shut off valve just under the gas tank. Starting procedure is, open fuel valve, open tank vent, choke, set throttle, pull cord till fires up, turn off choke. If I don't open fuel valve (or vent) it would be like your situation. Have you used this motor before? so you're sure there is no fuel shutoff valve that you've forgotten to open? or vent?

HTH

Brent

Thanks for the reply! The tank vent is open, and the fuel valve is open. Also, the spark plug is getting 'wet', so I know that fuel is getting through to the cylinder.
In addition, I am using fuel which is correctly mixed with 2-stroke oil, so I know that isn't a problem.

The only thing I can think of is that the fuel isn't getting through to the plug at the correct rate, or in the correct mixture of fuel\air, but I've checked all that I can think to check, and nothing seems to be working incorrectly.

I think if the plug looks wet, the motor is likely flooded. You do have spark, right? Despite that you've cleaned the carb, it could still need a carb rebuild (float could be stuck or needle valve not closing tight enough) meaning too much gas getting in.

Maybe it's just one of those motors that's easy to flood?? How familiar are you with this particular motor (have you managed to get it running many times in the past??). I have OB's that I get running from cold on the 2nd or 3rd pull every time... someone else usually has a bad time (they flood them, cause they don't know when to turn the choke off).

Brent

Re: 2HP Mariner Motor Problem

To be honest it wasn't me who actually had it working, it was my granddad, so I can't say I’m familiar with it. But I have spoken to him and he said that there was not really a special method to working it. I have checked and yes, I am getting a spark. As I said, it runs for a few seconds on 'engine starter', so the ignition must be working, and igniting the engine starter, but not the fuel.

Float and valve are fine. Infact, the entire carb seems to be sound.
I've tried varying the choke, but it doesn't want to start however I set it.

I'm still of the mind that somethin's amiss with the carb. If you have spark and the plugs are wet, then the mixture may be too far off to promote it running. By the way, you wanna be careful about using starter fluid in a 2 stroke. They need oil in the gas for lubrication.. starter fluid has none. You'd be better to use a squirt bottle of oil/gas mix.

My 2 hp is a family heirloom too!

Brent
