2nd Hand Boat Prices

I am contemplating purchasing a 2nd hand boat from America and shipping out to Queensland, Australia.(especially as the Australian $ is rising against the US $)The only US boat here seems to be Bayliner, so I am looking at them. How accurate/realistic are the figures quoted at iboats.com? as when I have found boats advertised, they seem quite a bit higher in asking price. The next question, is Bayliner an expensive boat compared to other breeds in the US? Are they at the top of the heap, middle or bottom? Thanks everybody. Cheers. Kiwi Phil

Bayliners are just a little Below the Bottom of the Heap....<br />If you were Given a Brand New 1, It wouldn't be worth the price of the shipping....

Check www.nadaguides.com for boat pricing. I would be hesitant to add in any accessories and you will be in the ballpark.<br /><br />Bob

My buddies and I refer to them as Gayliners. Their resale value is practically nothing around here it seems. I've never owned one, so I can't say anything firsthand, but I'd avoid them just because of the lack of resale value!

OK, so if a 2nd Hand Bayliner is not the best to buy, then what is? My needs are: My business does not allow us a holiday, but we do have odd days during the week free. We live 30 minutes from the sea. We have a large bay plus open sea: so I want it for pleasure, and a bit of fishing. I can leave the boat in a marina. I want something with an interior similar to that of a Bayliner Cierra with a mid berth, with Camper Covers.We need shade from the sun here. We need to be able to overnight. Anything between 23-30 foot would be fine. Prices for all 2nd hand stuff here are high, boats are old. So what other Makes are there? It seems Bayliner are good at marketing their product as they seem the only US Company selling in to our market, and 20% of all boats I have seen are theirs. Many thanks. Kiwi Phil

If you haven't already, you will need to check and find out what it will cost to ship it from the US. Consider cost from where you buy it in the US to the port of embarkation. Also there will probably be a ton of paperwork involved on both ends. Another thing to check is the technical requirements that may exist to get your boat into Kiwi land. For example it is extremely difficult and expensive for an individual to import an automobile purchased outside the US due to environmental requirements.<br /><br />For what it is worth - about 12 years ago I sold a 27' trailerable flybridge cruiser to a guy who lived 60 miles north of Stockholm Sweedan. Cost him $4,000.00 to ship it by freighter from Miami, Florida.

Maybe you should get into the boat importing business . Sounds like there's a market.<br /><br />Concerning brands, there are many good cruiser Manufacturers out there. Sea Ray, Formula, Wellcraft, Carver, Pacemaker, Chapparal, Chris Craft, and yes- even Bayliner....I could go on and on. Each and every one will have people who love 'em and people who hate 'em. The bottom line is to find one that YOU like and have it checked out to make sure it is worthy. <br /><br />BTW- I don't own a Bayliner, but I wouldn't cross it off my list just because there are a lot out there. They can be a bargain if they were well kept. They do NOT hold their value as well as others, which is a good thing for a used buyer!
