Hello All,

I recently aquired a 2 hp Evinrude model 2602S. It's been sitting in my friends barn for the past 15 years. The spark is very weak if at all. I checked the points and they look pretty good. I suspect the coil is the issue, but I'm not sure how to test it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Re: 2p Evinrude ignition

Unless you want to spring for several hundred dollars for a coil tester, about all you can do is check the resistances. From the spark plug wire to ground should be several k-ohms. If it is "open", then remove the coil from the wire and check just the coil without the wire. If that is open, it is toast. It is also toast if it shows any cracks, or leakage, etc.

While you have that meter out, check the resistance across the points. When they are closed, it should be zero ohms. Not one or two ohms---zero.

Well, you are the proud owner of 1976 2hp Evinrude!! I have a 1972 2hp Johnson and the little bugger runs great. Make sure your check the water pump and the lower gear oil!!!

Here are couple of links that show you how to assess your coil and condenser.
