Here is the deal I have a 98 crownline 182 with a volvo penta sx cobra drive and a 3.0 engine. I was out on the water the other day and it dropped a valve knocking a hole in the piston, in the head, and scarring the cylinder wall pretty bad. I have found an older 3 litre omc motor cheap that im going to attempt to put in it, the guy guranteed it to run. Ok so here is the deal my brother is an ASE certified mechanic, but all he works on is cars never any boats. Im trying to stay as cheap as possible bc im laid off at the moment. The motor is an 87 model so i understand it has a smaller flywheel but from what i understand it will work if i use the coupler and starter that is already on the motor? Im going to swap my intake, carb, and all other accessories off my current motor. I just need headed in the right direction as to if this will work being a pre 1990 omc motor onto a 98' volvo penta sx cobra outdrive. And also when I drop the outdrive and pull the engine do I need to go ahead and replace anything such as seals, gimball bearing, etc... someone please lead me in the right direction, I am goin to try to start this project by the weekend. Thanks!

Bump. Any opinions?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,... I don't do much with Volvos, but it sounds Possible....

The Coupler/ Flywheel may, or may Not be an Issue....

The block is the same and most of the head, i'm not 100% positive, I did this search a couple of weeks ago but I believe on the older OMC's the head, and intake/exhaust mani's are different - the intake/exhaust ports may be slightly different

As for seals - it's not to often you'll have the motor out so I would do everything that could be done now. I did not touch the OD when I pulled my motor, I had chained the motor to a support beam placed above the motor, undid the rear motor mounts, removed the front mount and slid it out.

and from talking to a guy, I understand the carbs are not only different orientation but the bolt pattern is different, but I think if you use his complete setup it may work...
