3.0 flooding badly

Hello everybody I need some help. I have a 98 model bayliner capri with a 3.0 LX. The engine serial is ok280846 from what I've been able to look up, I think it is a Mercarb. It was running perfect when I put it up for the winter. But when I got it out the other day it wouldn't crank. The fuel pump had quit working, no fuel at all to the carb. So I got a new one on today. Tried to crank it and it spit and sputtered and smoked. So I finally realized it was flooding like crazy. I mean it had a puddle down in the intake. So I took the carb off and cleaned it out. It was 99% clean when I opened it up. And no passages seemed to be blocked. I figured the needle or float had been stuck and freed up while I was taking it apart. So I didn't take every single thing apart on it. I just sprayed carb cleaner through all the ports and everything and put it back together. It cranked right up and purred for maybe 10 seconds and then it started flooding terribly. When I cut it off and walked back there I could actually hear the fuel bubbling and dripping out of the venturas just like it was before.
This was the first time the carb has ever been off since the factory. And when I winterize it I never fog the carb. I don't know if that matters or not. It lives in my shop during the winter and isn't exposed to weather or very cold temps.
I wish I would have checked the float for a hole while I had it apart. But I was sure that the needle was stuck, so I didn't. But I have seen that happen on motorcycles before.
I quit fooling with it this evening. Got kinda aggravated and high on gas fumes.

What does this sound like to yall? I don't want to order a carb kit and then find out that I didn't need it.

Thanks, Terry

Re: 3.0 flooding badly

When you installed the new fuel pump did you transfer the spacer to the new pump.It looks like a fuel pump gasket but is thicker.Alot of times it will get stuck to the old pump and if not used this will create to much fuel pressure.

Hmm. I saw the new gasket but the old one was still stick to the block, so I just used it. At a glance they looked the same thickness. I didn't think about that. I will try changing the gasket out.
Thanks for the input!

IT WORKED IT WORKED IT WORKED!!! Thank you so much for takin the time to help me out. I would have had a gremlin on my hands. When I changed the gasket it fired right up. No flooding at all. I'm gonna change the plugs for good measure, but it is running great!
Thanks again. Terry
