1997 3.0 GS Volvo on 24' Harris Pontoon. I have 30lbs compression on piston #3. Had a valve job done because it needed and thought that would solve the problem, it didn't. The shop is going to do the oil test to see if it is a piston problem. The cylinder walls look ok, wouldn't there be signs of damage if a ring broke? Could it be a stuck ring? I am planning on selling this boat and don't want to have to put a new engine in. Had cooling issue and engine did get hot. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... at 30 psi, the rings must be completely Gone,....

Have ya done a leak-down test to see where it's goin',..??

Th cylinder leak down test will tell you if its valves(and if its exhaust or intake) or rings. There is a chance you could have a leak to an oil passage would give you the same indication as bad rings would indicate however.

An oil passage would be a problem with the head?

Do this quick.Pour a little oil in the piston.
Then do a compession test.
Then if the comp goes up there is a ring problem.
No change? The valve job didn't work.
The rocker arms opening and closing the valves like they should.

Thanks everyone.

If it is the rings, should i just do a ring job, just fix this one piston or get a shortblock replacement? I bought a runabout and will be selling this pontoon so I am looking for the most economical option. I will post once the oil test has been done!

Head gasket. Not very likely but I figured I should mention it if you do a cylinder leak down test.

Do the test Jerry suggested as well.

Replacing the rings requires the engine to come out. At that point, might as well get a shortblock.
