3.0 history/compatibility

I have an 88 3.0 and I'm looking for a spares setup that I can keep on hand if anything fails. I know that the alpha 1 changed in the early 90s but I have a few questions:
-can I swap to a gen 2 leg? If so how?
-did the 3.0 ever come with a pre alpha leg?
-will the controls from all generations work on my 1988 setup?
-did the gear ratios ever change for the 3.0?
-anything else I should know?

-will the controls from all generations work on my 1988 setup? (Ayuh, up to the newest controls, where the forward ends changed)
-did the gear ratios ever change for the 3.0? (Nope, always been 1.98:1 or there abouts)
-anything else I should know?

The only thing I can add is that the 2.5l/120hp Mercruiser used the same drive as the 3.0l.

Judging by the questions here, and your other threads, best buy another 1988 3litre package, complete, and have that sitting in the shed 'waiting for something to break'....

The best thing you can do is to set up and maintain what you have in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations. Solve small problems before they become large.

So here is another question for ya guys. If I can find a gen 1 with a higher gear ratio can I compensate with a lower pitch prop? There is one for sale locally that is currently strapped to a 5.0L I could probably get for cheap.

Nope,.... They don't make an 11" or 9" pitch props to fit the drive,....

That's how I ended up with a 4.3LX in my ole barge,......
