I am very new to boating and have just bought a Stingray super sport SVB 176.<br /><br />The engine has not run for a couple of years and the interior is trashed and needs new upholstery & seats.<br /><br />I am trying to i.d. the motor and outboard so I can look for places to buy parts but not sure what or where to look as the serial number has rubbed off the outboard part where it says mercruiser.<br /><br />There are some serial numbers on a sticker on the motor, one says transom assembly OB895919 the other says drive unit OB890142i.<br /><br />OK don't laugh but what parts are these referring to?<br /><br />The friend at work who I bought the boat off has not given me the title yet, how can I tell what year it is? The last two serial numbers of the boat are 88 does this mean it is an '88?<br /><br />Thanks for the answers,<br /><br />Austin.

Re: 3.0 L mercruiser

The serial numbers you are seeing on the label are the first one that states transom assembly is the part that is bolted through the back of the boat from the inside its the black part that supports the steering and and is thru bolted to the outter assembly, which supports the gimble and tilt rams, the second number refers to the drive leg itself, I think you call it the outboard, this is bolted on the outside of the Transom assembly to the Gimble, The gimble allows side to side and up an down movement. the last 2 numbers in your boat serial number should be the year the first 3 letters are the manufacture. There should be a sticker on the motor with the engine serial number, but if not you can look down by the starter, and should see a metal tag rivited to the side on the engine block, the engine serial will be on that tag, by the looks of the drive numbers you have a mercrusier of about the same vintage of the boat. hope this helps.
