3.0 Litre OMC engine pull

Hey there, I just started pulling my engine last night (3 litre OMC out of a 17' bow rider (Peterborough)), wanting to put it in another boat.

It baffles me as to how easy it is,, seems to good to be true. I know what it takes to pull a 4 cylinder car engine and this seems like a cake walk.

I have two 7/16 bolts left that are bolted onto the outdrive and might be connecting the outdrive to the engine casing. What is more likely is that they are just holding ground cables in place.

Otherwise, it appears that there is some studs on either side of the engine. They have no bolt heads on them and would appear to pull apart when I chain up the engine. Am I correct?

Second question, do I need to support the outdrive when I pull the engine? Does anything have to be disconnected on the outdrive? Its a 400 OMC Outdrive.

Thank you!

Ayuh,... That would be a good idea, otherwise, it'll fall right out the back of the boat...

Btw,... That's a rather poor choice to refit another hull with...
It's an antique, 'n parts are gettin' Impossible to find for it...

I guess I am picturing the pull happening similar of that of a car, where the fly wheel on the engine separates from the transmission. Is a boat the same?

In mine it would mean that the two front mounts come with the engine, leaving the two back mounts in the hull with the outdrive unit. On mine the engine is blue and the outdrive in white.

Thanks for the first reply. I have had no problems getting parts so far and the engine purrs like a kitten. Its got very low hours on it.

BTW I have order the engine and outdrive manuel from Amazon, I should get it tomorrow. However, I know there are experts here that can answer my rookie questions.

I usually remove the sterndrive first, and then take the transom boot off and pull engine and intermediate housing out together as a unit. It's just easier to undo the lag bolts for the rear mounts than taking out all the flywheel housing bolts. But, it can be done the way you are doing it as long as the engine coupler splines aren't rusted to the intermediate shaft. That tin plate under the starter can be a stretch if it's still there.

Well, I think we shall proceed with caution. Just bought this boat a month ago and the story was that the engine had been replaced. I would think then that there would be no rust on the splines. It is clear that the engine has been removed as all the bolts are coming out nice and easy.

Thanks for your help. - Fred
