Process: Replacing manifold and riser
Engine: 3.0 L Mercruiser (carbed)
Year: 1988

Problem: Unexpected part

Narrative: I received the new manifold, riser gaskets and hardware. During removal of old parts, I find that there is a 1/4" thick iron part (which I will call a spacer) between the old manifold and the head. The assembly went like this: head/gasket/spacer/gasket/manifold.

I have received only one gasket with the manifold and am surprised to find this second gasket and spacer in there.

Questions: 1. Why is this there?

2. Can if form an acceptable gasket with material such as "form a gasket" to replace the one near the head? If so, what are the potential problems to look out for.

Thanks,

Edwin

Re: 3.0 mercruiser manifold spacer

Ayuh,...

1) I've never seen 1 like that,.... So, I have No Idea...

2) I wouldn't,... Intake gaskets are Cheap,+ readily available....

If it Leaks on the Intake side,.. It won't run, or it'll run Poorly...
If it Leaks on the Exhaust side,... It's LOUD,+ a Fire Hazard....

Thanks. I got the gasket. It's back together.
