Hi,

Have a no start condition. Boat ran last summer before I winterized in the fall. When I turn the key slave solenoid clicks but starter doesn't turn. Tried follow:

Run jumper cable from battery negative to chassis. No action from starter. Negative wire should be good.

Run jumper cable from battery positive to starter positive. No action. Positive wire should be good.

Tried jumping the starter solenoid positive to starter motor positive with screwdriver. No action.

Have 2 batteries. One brand new.

Does this mean the starter is bad? I tried tapping it. Still nothing. You'd think the last test bypassed everything and still no response from starter. Did I miss anything?

Thank you,
Julian

no, it usually means you have bad connections somewhere.

start at the battery and move to the starter and clean every connection with sandpaper until its shiny enough your mother would eat off it. once all the battery connections are clean and tight, then seal them with marine electrical varnish.

Yes but if say the negative wire was bad and I put a jumper cable from battery negative to chassis, wouldn't that overwrite the bad negative cable and make it good?

Well, pulled out the starter, hooked it up to the battery and it's dead. Took it apart, all rusted and seized. Lasted 10 years under my ownership and who knows how long before me. Time for a new one

that would mean you had water in your bilge at some time up over the starter

Interesting you say that-- I had it covered last year on the lift and the post giving the cover pitch gave out and the cover collected water. when I tried to clear the water, the cover came off the boat and spilled water all over the boat-- that's probably what did it! Good to know, thanks for the tip.

As far as a new started, there's one I see a Quicksilver brand: 50-8M0090697 that's like $280 and one that's a Delco brand (marine) 6563N for $89. The part number on the one I pulled is 9000763. Any reason to go with one versus the other? I like the $89 price better ;)

the quicksilver is a delco starter in a quick silver box. cut out the middle man.

when the motor left the GM factory, it had a GM sourced Delco starter on it

splashing a starter like that won't usually kill it, unless it was a big splash! I had a storm event swamp the back of my boat, ended up with the starter getting wet. It surprisingly worked the rest of the summer like a champ, but rusted itself solid over winter.
