I have a boat that has sat for about 6 years and I changed all the fluids and plugs and tried to start it. The celiniod only clicked so i thought that the engine was stuck and had to be freed up. So I used mystery oil in the heads and on the cams and turned the engine, although it did not seem to be stuck, it turned fairly easily. So then I tried to start the engine again and it made the same click, click noise. So now i believe that it is the Starter which is no good. I am going to try and take the starter out and have it looked at. Any help/tips about my problem would be great. And how hard is it to get the started out. Is it the starter? or the celinoid? Thanks guys.

Re: 3.0 MerCruiser Starter Troubles...

Could be either. Either solenoid could've corroded inside over the years, or starter brushes could've rusted in place. If you have good access, those are about the easiest motors to get a starter off that I can think of. I assume your battery hasn't been sitting in the boat for 6 years???
