Engine starts fine but will not get over 2400 RPM's at full throttle when drive is engaged. Checked the fuel filter and carburetor no success please help.

Re: 3.0 mercruiser

Is this the first time you have run the motor this year? Did you change the prop? A different pitch can lower RPM at WOT.
Are the butterflies opening all the way on the carb?
Also you may have a bad plug or wire. While idling in neutral remove the spark plug wires one at a time. Listen to see if the rpm's change at all. Wear some clean gloves when pulling the spark plug wires.
A compression test will tell you lots about the motor. A bad valve will lower the compression and show up as a loss of power.
That is a few things I would try. I am sure others have some ideas on what they would do.

Hello, Another thing to check is your exhaust flapper in the exhaust system. If the flapper is sticking it will cause backpressure that will choke the engine. They are also known to break free and lodge in the pipe that feeds to the exhaust bellows. This will also choke the motor. Just something else to check into. ;)
