Re: 3.0 motor swap ?
outdrive upper gearcases have different gear ratios.... V8 1.5:1, 6 cyl 1.81 or 1.65:1, 4 cyl 1.98:1
so you need the matching drive
you will also need a Y pipe to get both exhausts of a V6 or V8
plus, power steering and a thousand other little brackets and things which is why bondo suggests buy everything (in the form of a donor boat) - easiest way to go
I converted my Bayliner 1851 from a 3.0 to a V6 - I bought a new drive from SEI and sold my 1.98 ratio one.
I bought a brand new Y pipe and dry joint manifolds off eBay for $450! but mine is Gen II alpha- I did not go the donor boat route, but I also didn't go with power steering. A V8 definitely needs p/s.
I bought the shift interrupt update kit (3.0 had the switch setup in the valve cover on mine)
My hull has a tag that says "max 155HP" and it came with a 4.3 V6 in 92....so that confused me at first but then I realized 1992 ratings were propshaft, so my 185HP V6 is about right.
I fabricated steel brackets that mounted to the stringers for the front engine mounts. I bought mounts and other various pieces off eBay
Are you getting the impression yet that it's easier to just sell your boat and buy what you want? It is. Sounds like there is nostalgic value though. For me it was just a hobby thing. I like selling stuff, and by the time I sold my 3.0, drive, and everything else I pulled out, I had a free boat (got as much for those pieces as I paid for the boat) plus, I was having Mercarb issues and the 3.0 was just bugging me.
otherwise sell and there are deals on V8 19 footers everywhere..
