My 1986 3.0 OMC Cobra makes an intermittant clattering, loose bearing kind of noise at idle. Sounds like it's coming from the power steering pump ...or maybe the main water pump(they a relatively close together) My guess is it's my power steering pump. Water pumps usually squeel when their in need of replacement.

The noise goes away when I accelerate and drive. At first I though something was loose, but I don't see anything loose.

If it's my power steering pump, should I change it? It seems to work fine. What are the risks of just waiting...Can it jam and fry my belts? Or will I just loose power on the power steering...which is no biggy cause it can easily steer without it (16 ft bowrider).

Re: 3.0 noise at idle

Cobra,

The steering pump is just a constant displacement hydraulic pump, so if that is the problem then yes, it could sieze.

Have you taken the belt off and run the engine, just at idle, to verify the pump?

Chris.........

No. I will take off the belt and try it.

Yeah...kind of a ticking noise.

If it's gone, can I get the pump from an auto store? Probably any GM car steering pump would do?

Auto or marine pumps are the same.
But - if it needs replaced -take old pump with you, and match up
the hose connections on back of pump.

There are many variations. Some times you have to use your
old case and install new innards

And they are direction sensitive. Make a note of the direction of rotation so they supply you the right one.

Chris.............
