1988 bayliner 3.0 omc I/O runs great for about 4 miles up river then sputters and dies out. Replaced the points and condenser cause I had no spark but the coil is fine. AFter replacing the pints and condenser it fires right up. But runs up river for 3-4 miles and dies out again. Let the condenser cool down and it fires back up again. What could be a cause to this issue? Thanks in advance!

Bad resistor or lack of one??? Check the voltage at the coil... Is it burning up points too?

Did you set everything correctly?

Let the coil or the condenser cool down???

i had the same issues till today with mine, same thing, 1988 Bayliner Capri , with a 3.0L GM motor, i was haven a issue with 2 items, the gap in the distributer was set to TDC setting giving me a .050 gap as it rotated, i adjusted it to DCB (Dead Center Bottum) , heck i will break it down, just under the rotor you look at the shaft, there will be 4 high points and 4 flat areas, it was adjusted to .019 gap on the high peak which spit me into a .050 on the rotatation, i redid it to booook specs of .019 on the lower FLAT sections, and everything was fine, i was also running HOT on the coil, lol now this is the funny part, i went out back to my brothers house and we pulled the coil off a 351 Ford Motor, i was just playing around being old school mech, and i replaced that little thing with the ford one, and OMG, it worked, it stays cool, and i played well over 8 hours on the lake today, so maybe give that a shot, i know some people would say YOUR NUTS, but i had to try it and by golly it worked..
